Massage Therapy Information
Massage Therapy involves the use of therapeutic techniques in the manipulation of soft tissue to bring about and promote health, function and improved performance. It is a stand-alone therapy but is particularly effective when used in conjunction with chiropractic care.
A massage therapist can provide further relief with a number of conditions that you may be seeing your chiropractor for, including:
The benefits of massage
Appointment times
Most massage appointments last between forty-five minutes and one hour. Thirty minute massages are generally only effective for particular areas of the body requiring special attention. Longer sessions up to ninety minutes are for the whole body or specific treatment needs.
On your first visit to the massage therapist a one hour appointment will be needed. This is important because the therapist will need to discuss and assess your health and condition to determine what type of massage is most suited to your needs.
Will the massage be painful?
Muscles that are unhealthy by way of overuse, misuse or trauma, may be painful when massaged. They may also feel tender following the massage. This tenderness may last for several hours and in some cases, days. As the muscle begins to heal and become healthier, less pain is associated with the massage. With relaxation techniques there should be little or no pain.
How often do I need to see a Massage Therapist?
This will depend on your healing ability and the nature of your injury and/or condition. Your massage therapist will develop a care plan that suits your own health and maintenance goals. If you are also having chiropractic care this plan will be developed in consultation with your chiropractor.
The Different Stages of Care
As with chiropractic care plans there are different stages of care. These include:
Relief
This first stage of care involves reducing pain, tension, swelling and promoting an increase in circulation to enhance healing at the injured area and to remove waste products.
Correction
This stage involves breaking down scar tissue and returning muscles to their normal resting length. This increases the mobility of the affected joints and improves muscle tone. The body begins to return to a more healthy state.
Strength and Conditioning
At this level the muscles are retrained to prevent injury and to regain postural balance.
Maintenance
This final stage is concerned with prevention. By maintaining the healthy state of the soft tissues within your body, your muscles stay more relaxed and supple. This allows for better circulation of nutrients and removal of waste products. This ultimately leads to more energy and alertness, reduced stress, tension and pain, and a greater ease of movement.
