Some helpful tips if you are suffering from constipation

  • Avoid haste and allow time for nature to take its course and to respond when it calls!

  • Make sure you are drinking enough water. If you are properly hydrated your urine will be clear.

  • Try drinking a glass of hot water with the juice of half a lemon first thing in the morning and if time allows go for a brisk walk.

  • Eat plenty of whole foods containing fibre such as raw vegetables, raw and dried fruits and, most beans.

  • If you do not have a sensitivity to wheat, wheat bran can aid constipation by softening stools, preventing straining, increasing the weight of stools and speeding up the intestinal transit time of stool. However relying on pure wheat bran can be dangerous, since it irritates the delicate lining of the intestines and can inhibit mineral absorption.

  • Beneficial bacteria (acidophilus and bifidus) in capsule form can also aid elimination.

  • To relax intestinal muscles Aloe Vera Juice and Chamomile may be beneficial. Other herbs such as Dandelion, Psyllium and Senna are all beneficial in the treatment of constipation. Of course over- the - counter preparations should be used according to the directions provided.

  • Avoid too much animal foods (particularly cheese), refined foods and sugar.

  • Caution: If constipation persists, is progressively worsening or is accompanied by other symptoms please make an appointment with our Naturopath at your nearest Centre for further assessment.
