Tips for Fighting Fatigue

1. A balanced spine
A common cause of fatigue is an unbalanced spinal column. How? A simple analogy: If you were carrying a bowling ball, how much more difficult would it be to carry it at a distance from your body than at your side? Your head weighs about as much as a bowling ball; if your head is off-centre, "carrying" it can exhaust you! Also, your 24 movable vertebrae, sacrum, hips and pelvis also need proper alignment in order to make efficient use of your energy. A modest unbalance (for example, a "short" leg) could translate into a considerable amount of wasted energy as the hours, days, weeks and months add up.

The spine houses the spinal cord which carries the signals from the brain out to the rest of the body. If the spine is healthy and moving properly it also helps your nervous system to work more efficiently. This is vital as the nervous system controls all the body's functions. Therefore a healthy spine and nervous system keeps your flow of energy balanced, your immune system strong and your resistance to disease high. Our chiropractors are highly skilled in assessing and correcting spinal problems.

2. Eating the right foods and if necessary taking the right supplements.
This will provide the body with the right fuel for it to work properly and efficiently. Our Naturopaths are well trained to help in this area and prescribe dietary changes and supplements accordingly.

3. Drink plenty of water.
Water is best absorbed if you are sipping it throughout the day. You are properly hydrated if your urine is clear. The general rule of having 8 litres of water per day is a fallacy.

4. Exercise regularly.
The human body loves movement. It is not made for sitting for long hours in front of computers or lounging in front of the TV. Regular exercise is another vital ingredient of good health as it helps you relax and gives you energy. However beware of the excessive mental and physical stress from over-exercising or over-training. Exercise should not become an obsession as this can also cause fatigue and adversely affect your health. Being fit does not necessarily mean good health.

5. Have a good night's sleep.
The body also needs time for rest to recharge and repair so a good night's sleep is also very important for good health. If you are under emotional stress you need one hour more of sleep each night. So turn off that TV and go to bed!!!

6. Sunlight
The sun has been getting a lot of bad press lately however the human body needs sunlight to work properly. An good example of too little sun is that some people, particularly women are now taking Vitamen D as they are showing signs of osteoporosis. The "Slip, slop, slap" campaign was too effective!! Obviously if you are suffering from sunburn you have had too much sun and this also is not good for you.

7. Minimise Negative Stress
Probably the hardest to organize these days is minimizing negative stress. Stress is one of the major causes of illness in today's society. (See our section under Emotional stress)

8. Enjoy a balanced lifestyle
This is something we all should be planning and working toward.
