Why should expectant mothers have Chiropractic care during pregnancy?
A women's body goes through enormous hormonal and physical changes in preparation for creating the right environment for the developing baby. A mother's centre of gravity is shifted and the pelvic structure changes dramatically. This places additional pressure on the muscles, ligaments, joints, discs and bones of a mother's spine often causing new spinal problems and the aggravation of old ones. Unfortunately, 50% of women experience significant levels of back or pelvic pain during their pregnancy.
Research has demonstrated that chiropractic care helps to relieve back pain for up to 85% of pregnant women. By correcting spinal problems and assisting the spine to become as flexible and as strong as possible, chiropractic care helps a mother's body adapt to the changing pressures of pregnancy. It is no wonder that international studies have shown that the number of pregnant women including chiropractic care as part of their pregnancy care regime is increasing.1
Are there any benefits to Chiropractic care during labour?
Research has also shown that women receiving chiropractic care during pregnancy have reported less back pain both in pregnancy and in labour.3 Expectant mothers need to be aware of the importance of pelvic alignment during pregnancy to alleviate pain and reduce the chance of a caesarean birth or lengthy labour. With gentle adjustments to the pelvis, sacrum and spine, chiropractic can restore balance to the pelvis and reduce the chance of pelvic constraint, allowing babies to get themselves into the best possible position for birth. Chiropractic care also helps to increase the stability of the spine and pelvis. The pelvis will be able to relax more allowing the joints to expand more freely during labour and settle more easily afterwards. This improves the ease of delivery, creating less stress and pressure on both the mother and baby.
Studies by international industry experts found that first time mothers not receiving chiropractic care, experienced on average a 14 hour labour time, whereas those who had received chiropractic care, the mean labour time was only eight hours. For women having subsequent births, the average labour time decreased from nine hours to four to five hours respectively.2
Including chiropractic care in pregnancy has many benefits both for mother and baby. In addition, more and more mothers are also choosing to include a chiropractic check up as part of their post-birth recovery.
The spine also houses the spinal cord. The spinal cord together with the brain forms the central nervous system which controls all of your body's functions. Spinal problems can interfere with the function of the nervous system. Consequently, the correction of spinal problems decreases interference to the nervous system which of course helps your whole body to be as healthy as it can be. This provides the best possible environment for your baby to grow healthy and strong.
