Tips on Managing your Neck Pain at Home

  • Avoid sudden sharp sudden movements of the head.
  • Keep the movement you do have however do not move into positions that cause pain.
  • Within the first 24 hours, wrap an ice pack or frozen peas in a damp tea-towel. Lay a dry tea towel over the injured area. Place the damp tea towel containing the icepack on top of the dry tea towel for 15 minutes each hour.
  • After 24 hours heat packs (wheat bags or hot water bottles) may also be applied over the injured area, again covered by a dry tea towel, for 20 minutes. The heat pack is usually used after the cold pack. At this stage of the healing process you can alternate the heat applications with cold packs.
  • Do not sleep on your stomach.
  • Do not mask the pain with anti-inflammatories and continue to do what you could not do before. This will lead to further damage and injury. Pain will tell you what you can or cannot do.
