Chiropractic Treatment for Lower Back Pain

The Chiropractor assesses lifestyle, medical history and then conducts a thorough examination before arriving at a diagnosis of what structures in the spine have been injured and causing the back pain. The Chiropractor then explains the cause of the lower back pain and begins treatment. Treatment may include:

  • Specific muscles release techniques.
  • Gentle stretching of the lower back.
  • Wedge-shaped blocks placed under the hips.
  • A small single or double-headed adjusting instrument used specifically over the injured area.
  • Muscle-testing or kinesiology to identify the underlying cause of the lower back pain.
  • Postural advice: when standing, at work on the computer and whilst sleeping
  • Advice to help protect your back and aid your bodies healing capabilities.
  • Exercise advice to help maintain flexibility and to strengthen the lower back.
  • Tips on Managing your Lower Back Pain at Home

  • Lying down on your back with a pillow supporting your knees. However, prolonged bed rest over 2-4 days is not recommended.
  • Avoid sitting, lifting, sharp sudden movements and twisting.
  • Do not move into positions that cause pain.
  • Within the first 24 hours, wrap an ice pack or frozen peas in a damp tea-towel. Lay a dry tea towel over the injured area. Place the damp tea towel containing the icepack on top of the dry tea towel for 15 minutes each hour.
  • After 24 hours heat packs (wheat bags or hot water bottles) may also be applied over the injured area, again covered by a dry tea towel, for 20 minutes. The heat pack is usually used after the cold pack. At this stage of the healing process you can alternate the heat applications with cold packs.
  • Wear comfortable flat or low-heeled shoes
  • Do not mask the pain with anti-inflammatories and continue to do what you could not do before. This will lead to further damage and injury. Pain will tell you what you can or cannot do.
