Constipation

Constipation, a hard or inadequate bowel movement, is an uncomfortable experience which many of us have been subject to at some stage of our life. Inadequate, infrequent or incomplete bowel motions may result in discomfort, headaches, nausea or anxiety. Ideally people should have one bowel movement a day but this can vary individually, depending on nerve signals to the intestines, eating habits, physical activity and stress.

There are many causes of constipation including:

  • Stress
  • Insufficient food or liquid intake.
  • Inadequate fibre in the diet.
  • Too much protein - particularly red meat and cheese.
  • Too many refined foods.
  • Poor bile flow from the gall bladder.
  • Poor liver and or thyroid function.
  • Dehydration.
  • Pregnancy.
  • Antacids
  • Metabolic disorders.
  • Structural abnormalities
  • Tumours.
  • Strokes.
  • Inactivity.
  • Spinal cord trauma.
  • Continued reliance on enemas or laxatives.
  • Some pharmaceutical drugs.
