The Cause of Scoliosis
However these changes appear to be a product of the scoliosis not the cause. Structural deformities appear after a preliminary functional scoliosis develops. These changes include wedging of the vertebral bodies and discs.
Changes include uneven tension in the muscles along the spine. These changes in the muscle tissue are in response to the curve and so are not considered a cause of the curve.
Chemical imbalances (of melatonin and calmodulin) in the body may contribute to the progression of scoliosis
Scoliosis is often found in those who have suffered damage to the spinal cord. It has been suggested that one sided weakness of the muscles along the spine may occur due to the way the brain perceives movement.
Idiopathic scoliosis may relate to a decreased sensation on one side which affects the reflex postural control systems of the body. This gives us a basis for the use of chiropractic adjustments to increase movement of the involved spinal joints on the scoliosis patient to stimulate sensation on the problem side of the spine.
Researchers have found hypothalamus lesions produce a long thoracic curve whereas brainstem lesions produce a short thoracic curve.
